But hashtags on Facebook? That\u2019s not so clear cut. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of brands don\u2019t use hashtags regularly or they don\u2019t use them at all. They\u2019re often not even included in their Facebook strategies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are lots of doubts when it comes to using hashtags. How many should you use? What are the best ways to implement them? Marketers struggle with many questions like these\u2026 some don\u2019t consider using them all together!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, Facebook recommends and encourages the use of hashtags. But how does it look in practice? Is it actually beneficial for marketers to use them? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer isn\u2019t straightforward. Even Facebook itself <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/facebookmedia\/blog\/using-hashtags-on-facebook\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hasn\u2019t updated its guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about hashtags for more over 2 years now. And 2 years in digital marketing and social media is A LOT. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why we did a little digging ourselves. The first idea emerged in 2007 and they were officially rolled out in 2009. When it comes to Facebook, the history of hashtags starts in 2013, when they were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2013\/06\/public-conversations-on-facebook\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">officially released<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the platform. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in 2013 the idea was pretty simple:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hashtags are just the first step to help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in public conversations.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How hashtags work is pretty simple. Add a \u201c#\u201d to the start of a word and you have a hashtag. It\u2019s easy and has potential, so why not using them? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hashtags <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/resources\/knowledge-base\/what-are-hashtags-and-how-to-use-them-on-facebook\/\">make our posts searchable<\/a>. The content we create and publish on social media is easier to find with some hashtags attached. The hashtag should be simple, yet informative and connected to what your brand offers and represents. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve created your hashtag and use it along with other hashtags on Twitter and Instagram, include the most relevant of them on Facebook. It will ensure consistency and integrate all your marketing and social media activities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you use hashtags on Facebook? It makes your post more searchable, which is exactly why you\u2019d want to use them. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Do hashtags and engagement go together?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What really matters is whether using hashtags correlates with post engagement. And guess what &#8211; we\u2019ve already analyzed it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>To a certain extent, adding hashtags to Facebook posts helps when it comes to increasing engagement. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our research shows that including 1 to 3 hashtags significantly improves engagement. Add between 1 and 3 hashtags. It will look natural and will better your overall Facebook post performance. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also interesting to see how often brands use hashtags right now. Our analysis shows that they\u2019re not using them all that much. In both cases, it\u2019s possible to do something more &#8211; whether adding hashtags to posts on Facebook or writing longer tweets &#8211; and brands are actually not taking advantage of these possibilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Practical marketer&#8217;s perspective<\/strong> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these are our observations and analyses, but how does it look in practice? How does it look from a marketer\u2019s perspective? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve asked one of them &#8211; Kinga Odziemek from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainybees.pl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brainy Bees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; about her experience and thoughts: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using hashtags on Facebook can be tricky. Let&#8217;s say: I find hashtags more useful for Twitter and Instagram. However, there are a few ways of using a # on Facebook without annoying the whole world:<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1) if your multichannel campaign was given a specific name, one way to get it trending is to make a hashtag out of it (e.g. #ShareACoke or #LikeAGirl). Finishing or starting a story with a hashtag on Facebook looks consistent and clear &#8211; you can use a brand&#8217;s name as a hashtag or identify some communication lines with hashtags (e.g. #SocialMediaTip).<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2) if you want to group some comments or opinions, narrow the discussion or identify the topic of conversation, using a hashtag can help organise it (e.g. #cafe #london #feedback).<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) if you are into real-time marketing, using a hashtag at the end of your message can be useful for those who may not get the context (e.g. #BanksyAuction).<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Best practices<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we\u2019re nearing the end, let\u2019s quickly sum up all we\u2019ve found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the top 5 best practices for each and every brand: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Create your brand\u2019s own hashtag and use it consistently<\/strong> in your posts. Remember that it should raise awareness and interest in your brand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Compared to Instagram, with Facebook less is definitely more. Our research shows that <strong>we shouldn\u2019t use too many hashtags in Facebook posts<\/strong>. 1 to 3 is definitely enough.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t go for something obvious and very popular. <strong>Go for something specific<\/strong>, something that\u2019ll bring additional value to your content.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Only use relevant hashtags.<\/strong> We know they might improve performance, and on Facebook we aren\u2019t limited when it comes to adding hashtags. But remember, it\u2019s not your personal profile where you can do whatever you want. This is your brand\u2019s profile. You want to create the impression that your brand is credible and trustworthy, so don\u2019t use hashtags randomly. Keep in mind a limit of 3 hashtags will definitely help to keep the relevancy.<\/li>\n<li>The visual aspect of the social profiles we run is also important. While Instagram posts look good with many a lot of hashtags, <strong>using so many hashtags on Facebook just comes across as spammy<\/strong>. It doesn\u2019t look good. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, what looks good and what doesn\u2019t is subjective and might not be the most important thing to consider. Just keep in mind the results of our analysis. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Test and analyze<\/strong> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using 1-2 hashtags won\u2019t do any harm. But as always, the best thing we can advise is to\u2026 test it yourself. \ud83d\ude09 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each brand and industry is different.
