Operating in 53 cities in 12 countries, Careem has grown immensely since its inception in 2012, being valued at over $1 billion in 2016. Given this fast but stable growth, as well as a series E round of funding of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/08\/07\/didi-backs-careem\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$500 million completed in June<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was in big part due to an investment by Daimler, this has put the company at a valuation of over $2 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This has been met with a big expansion in recent months which sees Careem having its number of Captains (drivers) in Egypt double from 50,000 in March to 100,000 by the end of the year<a href=\"https:\/\/www.albawaba.com\/business\/pr\/number-careem-captains-set-hit-100000-egypt-1020136\"> based on projections<\/a>. This was in big part led by the expansion to 14 cities. This can be attributed of course to the difference in the population with Egypt (95 million) at 10 times more people than the UAE (9.25 million).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For other platforms, it does seem that Instagram seems to be more popular in the UAE than it is in Egypt because there isn&#8217;t such a large discrepancy between the numbers on that platform even with the huge population difference. In comparison to Facebook, this is completely overshadowed by the performance of the social media giant.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a lighter note on Facebook &amp; YouTube, Careem has been doing well with their interesting and creative campaigns. This has led to plans and implementation of a<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.konbini.com\/us\/lifestyle\/uber-launching-national-bus-service-egypt\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bus service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Careem had been a little ahead of the curve with this one since they had already taken this initiative by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbesmiddleeast.com\/en\/careem-invests-in-egyptian-transportation-startup-swvl\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investing in startup Swvl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which offers a similar service. The advantage of cross-promotion can be seen in the post that promoted a ride to El Sahel (the north coast in Egypt, a popular summer destination) for a price of 200 Egyptian Pounds (roughly 11 USD) which helped Swvl&#8217;s page also gain quite a bit of attention! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FCareemEG%2Fvideos%2F1975789699316140%2F&amp;show_text=1&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"644\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;ve also seen the big emergence of UberEATS, especially into the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.khaleejtimes.com\/nation\/dubai\/ubereats-the-new-food-delivery-service-in-dubai\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UAE since September 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and soon coming to Egypt &#8211; they&#8217;re<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/en-PL\/careers\/list\/28092\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hiring a GM now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Careem has also diversified by going into<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CareemEG\/videos\/1982240468671063\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Careem Scooter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a campaign they&#8217;ve been recently promoting since the end of July and which was their most popular post over the last few months. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These new additions generally boost the online presence and impact of the brands and cross-promote the brand name with more ways to make users more &#8220;dependent&#8221; on their services and turning them into an integral part of their lives. Furthermore, while looking at the Uber posts, a big chunk of the comments seen are people inquiring about jobs with Uber and sometimes even posting their contact details for them to be recruited. In the comment section. Of a random Facebook post. Yes, that\u2019s incredibly annoying &#8211; but some people still think that\u2019s how they\u2019ll get hired. Here\u2019s one that took the cake, even though it was more relevant than other posts for what it\u2019s worth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fuber.ae%2Fposts%2F1547729528582180%3A0&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"485\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Visuals are taking over<\/h2>\n<p>As for the type of content, videos are definitely the way to go as is shown with Careem\u2019s activities and which shows that their strategy has definitely worked much better even though they have a similar number of likes on their page as Uber UAE does. The most popular types of posts were photos in both cases which just confirms the trends that non-visual posts are becoming less and less popular, especially with brands and that customers are used to and expect photos and videos rather than statuses and links to be shared.<\/p>\n<h2>Going forward<\/h2>\n<p>We expect Careem and Uber to keep going with creative campaigns and pushing the border with their competitions, promo codes and community outreach to stay in touch with their fans.
