But that\u2019s not all you need to know.<\/p>\n<p>So in this article, we\u2019ll show you how you can measure your engagement effectively with <a href=\"http:\/\/sotrender.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">Sotrender<\/a> and why we decided to implement our own unique measures.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>\/ text updated in May 2020\/\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Why is it so important to engage in social media?<\/h2>\n<p>Social media totally changed the way brands communicate with their customers. Brand monologues turned into a mutual dialogue with customers. Each social media channel has different ways of engaging their audiences, which is one of the core goals of all social media activity. Simply put,<strong> engagement shows whether a brand succeeds in getting a reaction from their audience, helping to spread viral content<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/visual.ly\/simple-science-facebook-engagement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Open Forum<\/a><\/span>\u00a0confirms just how important engagement is. Their data indicates that every user engaged by activities on a Facebook Page enables that Page to reach 30 new potential fans. By building fan engagement, brands will provoke an emotional reaction with the potential to benefit the brand itself. These benefits are plenty, including product promotion and brand recognition.<\/p>\n<h2>How do I measure engagement?<\/h2>\n<p>Engagement in social media refers to any time a user reacts to content. And there are tons of possibilities when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/brame.io\/blog\/interactive-post-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">engaging users<\/a>, especially between platforms. But there are some unifying activities between them &#8211; liking, sharing, and commenting. Keep in mind that what they&#8217;re called differs across platforms. Different reactions demand different amounts of effort. The bigger the effort, the more engaging the activity.<\/p>\n<p>However, your indicator of good engagement should not be just a sum of the different activities. That will give you a skewed representation of your level of success. That\u2019s why we created the Interactivity Index for Facebook and the Activity Index for other social media platforms &#8211; Twitter, and Instagram. And that\u2019s not all: \u00a0if you want to compare two profiles of differing sizes, just look at their Relative Activity Index.<\/p>\n<h2>Measure social media engagement with Sotrender!<\/h2>\n<p>Like I said above, people are more likely to only <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u2018like\u2019<\/span>\u00a0posts rather than engage in discussions with the brand or share a brand\u2019s content. This means that each action has a different weight to it, and should be measured accordingly. Here&#8217;s what engagement typically looks like on a Facebook post. As you can see, the majority of the activity is taken up by likes, with shares and comments taking up less than 10% of the activity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24735\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Types-of-user-activities-on-Facebook.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"531\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Types-of-user-activities-on-Facebook.png 531w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Types-of-user-activities-on-Facebook-475x475.png 475w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Types-of-user-activities-on-Facebook-80x80.png 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So how do we adjust this in Sotrender? In order to accurately summarize all activities that occur on Facebook, we established the following weights for user activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reaction \u2192 1 (the least amount of effort)<\/li>\n<li>Comment \u2192 4<\/li>\n<li>Text only \u2192 8<\/li>\n<li>Multimedia \u2192 12<\/li>\n<li>Share \u2192 16 (the most effort as well as more likely to increase your reach)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of these come together to form what we call the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/resources\/faq\/sotrender-count-interactivity-index-relative-interactivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Interactivity Index<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--HubSpot Call-to-Action Code --><span id=\"hs-cta-wrapper-17aa57f4-5c32-46e4-a7e9-d94ffcd56c10\" class=\"hs-cta-wrapper\"><span id=\"hs-cta-17aa57f4-5c32-46e4-a7e9-d94ffcd56c10\" class=\"hs-cta-node hs-cta-17aa57f4-5c32-46e4-a7e9-d94ffcd56c10\"><!-- [if lte IE 8]>\n\n\n<div id=\"hs-cta-ie-element\"><\/div>\n\n\n<![endif]--><a href=\"https:\/\/cta-redirect.hubspot.com\/cta\/redirect\/3842881\/17aa57f4-5c32-46e4-a7e9-d94ffcd56c10\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"hs-cta-img-17aa57f4-5c32-46e4-a7e9-d94ffcd56c10\" class=\"hs-cta-img aligncenter\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/no-cache.hubspot.com\/cta\/default\/3842881\/17aa57f4-5c32-46e4-a7e9-d94ffcd56c10.png\" alt=\"Start analyzing your Facebook profiles with Sotrender!\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><!-- end HubSpot Call-to-Action Code --><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Relative Activity Index<\/strong> is an indicator that makes it possible to reasonably compare profiles that greatly differ in size. It includes only fan activities and Page size. It is calculated by using this formula:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relative Interactivity Index<\/strong> = fan InI\/fan number*1000<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>Twitter<\/strong>, it\u2019s somewhat different, as we add a profile\u2019s own activity into the Activity Index, so the weights look like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Admin\u2019s tweet \u2192 8<\/li>\n<li>Admin\u2019s retweets and replies \u2192 5<\/li>\n<li>Retweets \u2192 3<\/li>\n<li>Likes \u2192 1<\/li>\n<li>Reply \u2192 4<\/li>\n<li>Mention \u2192 2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-24737\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Activity-Index-for-YouTube.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"812\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Activity-Index-for-YouTube.png 812w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Activity-Index-for-YouTube-475x225.png 475w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Activity-Index-for-YouTube-768x363.png 768w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Activity-Index-for-YouTube-600x284.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 812px) 100vw, 812px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, <strong>Instagram<\/strong> doesn\u2019t allow native reposting, so the Activity Index looks like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Likes \u2192 1<\/li>\n<li>Comments \u2192 8<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sot_chart-25.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40729 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sot_chart-25-950x634.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"808\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sot_chart-25-950x634.png 950w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sot_chart-25-475x317.png 475w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sot_chart-25-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sot_chart-25.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 808px) 100vw, 808px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Relative Activity Index<\/strong> is counted the same as with Facebook:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relative Activity Index<\/strong> = \u00a0Activity Index\/follower(subscriber) number*1000<\/p>\n<h2>Who are engaged users?<\/h2>\n<p>The last indicator of engagement is the number of engaged users. On Facebook, <strong>they are users who were in any way active on the Page over a given period of time<\/strong>. Be it liking, commenting, sharing a Page\u2019s content, adding a post or piece of media, it\u2019s all counted as activity. For Twitter, engaged users are the ones that mentioned a profile or re-tweeted its tweet.
