We\u2019re talking about the <\/span><b>influencers connected directly to the world of technology and marketing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We know people who\u2019ve learned first hand that personal branding is not a piece of cake \u2013 and we talked to them about it in social media. The outcome is below.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Facebook vs Twitter = battle unresolved<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing we did was ask our influencers which platform they would choose for building their personal brand if they had to start right here, right now. If you\u2019re already hoping for a clear and final answer, we\u2019re sorry to disappoint &#8211; it\u2019s a bit more complicated than that. Perspectives and opinions are very diverse when it comes to this topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ian Cleary <\/strong>(Founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.razorsocial.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RazorSocial<\/a> blog and initiator of the Razor Social Community\u00a0&#8211; you can join his free 4-part video training series about Social Media <a href=\"http:\/\/www.razorsocial.com\/free-training\">here<\/a>!) would choose Facebook \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because there are over 1.3 billion people on Facebook and it has amazing targeting options through Facebook ads. Also I like being able to connect my website traffic to Facebook as an audience I can retarget with ads<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>So&#8230; Facebook rocks?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Ian&#8217;s choice is Facebook, <strong>Lukasz Zelezny, <\/strong>who is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zelezny.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SEO Speaker<\/a> and Social Media Consultant as well as head of organic acquisition at uSwitch.com, would \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">definitely go with <\/span><\/i><strong><i>Twitter<\/i><\/strong><b><i>. <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its<\/span><\/i><b><i> quick<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><b><i>slick<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><\/i><b><i>short<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All I need. And there is less of &#8220;my cat&#8221; or &#8220;my dinner&#8221; photos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d. Also <strong>Lilach Bullock, <\/strong> the highly influential entrepreneur and <a href=\"http:\/\/lilachbullock.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Media Marketing Expert<\/a>, casts her vote for Twitter. In her words, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter is an amazing platform for building a brand from scratch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s a much better platform for engaging with your customers and potential customers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. In her opinion \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook is constantly making it more and more difficult to get your brand posts in people&#8217;s updates<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two of our influencers, <strong>Dan Purvis<\/strong> &#8211; Founder and Director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commsaxis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Communications Axis Marketing Agency<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Pollage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Polyanna Ward<\/strong> <\/a>&#8211; Social Media Manager at Mondelez International, conditions their decisions on a variety of factors and does not want to decide on one platform. Dan recommends \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both platforms but with specific time spent on two primary activities: on Facebook, join and get involved in the right Groups to help drive conversations, traffic, and credibility; on Twitter, the time should be spent on identifying and engaging with your target audience and the most relevant influencers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. In the opinion of Polyanna, Facebook is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cgreat for getting into your close friends and family&#8217;s newsfeeds and sharing your achievements for example, but when it comes to opinion pieces it\u2019s hard to get a big discussion going<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d. Lukasz Zelezny claims that one, first of all, needs to be <strong>an expert in their area<\/strong> &#8211; then can be remembered for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201csharing knowledge they can execute and utilize<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Being a person who \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is famous because is famous<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d may affect your personal brand, and not necessarily in a positive way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polyanna also gets our attention on figuring out what you want to talk about and <strong>to realize what you want to be known for<\/strong>. At the same time she also tries \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to not box myself into just #socialmedia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and her approach also reflects in Lukasz\u2019 advice of \u00a0\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">going out of the industry bubble<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and sharing your opinion across channels that aren\u2019t strictly related to your area of interest. Our influencers know about the power and potential of creating and distributing content. Ian\u2019s advice is to \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provide content that stands out<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less content but better quality<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Even if it seems to be obvious for you, there are still tons of people who forget about it and prepare mediocre content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dan considers not only sharing your own content to be important, but also \u201cs<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">haring the right content from the right people<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d &#8211; so once again we would like to <strong>draw your attention to everything you publish<\/strong> and share. For Lilach, it&#8217;s actually engagement that is \u201c<strong><em>the key to social media success<\/em><\/strong>\u201d. To achieve success in building a personal brand on social media, it&#8217;s worth being<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cas active as possible on a daily basis and try to find opportunities to interact with other users<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. From Dan\u2019s point of view, \u00a0\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you really have got to get involved in conversations, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way or another, if you decide on building a brand, you must accept a lot of things connected to it. He also provides us with some examples of good practices with building your brand on Twitter: \u201c<\/span><b><i>Track hashtags<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relevant to your brand and join in the buzz, follow the right influencers and try to get on their radar by having conversations with them, and use <\/span><\/i><b><i>Twitter Advanced Search<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find people talking about the challenges you solve so you can provide advice.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By engagement, it doesn\u2019t only have to mean interaction with users. It also includes interacting between influencers in order to support each other&#8217;s activity &#8211; so get involved in building your network. Polyanna admits that &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the speed at which we can communicate and share ideas makes me really appreciate the digital era that we live in.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; It\u2019s hard to disagree &#8211; the speed of digital makes all communication quick, leaving no mercy for late replies. People want replies here and now, and they forget the context quickly. That is why Dan&#8217;s opinion is nothing but true: &#8220;<\/span><b><i>replying quickly to mentions<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thanking people for following or RT\u2019g etc., and being seen to react quickly will help show that you care<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; If you reply, you care. What is another advantage of this solution, in her opinion? &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will also be able to see your analytics and insights so you can improve your social media strategy.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; You can give a few tools a try and see which one works best for you &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our top choices for useful tools to building a personal brand are coming soon!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Take your time. <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rushing never helped anyone. You need to put effort into building your personal brand and spend time on creating a strategy, good and valuable content, as well as investing in self-development. You also need to be aware that results may not come as soon as you want them to. It may take some time until you become a real influencer in your field. Isn\u2019t it worth it though? Look at all of the people who gave you some advice. They are known in their fields, but they never gave up working on their own professional appearance.
