With National Dog Day just a few days ahead (and with International Cat Day a few weeks ago), we decided to end the everlasting fight between cat and dog owners. That also means\u00a0the definitive answer for brands if they should post about dogs or cats to get better results. <\/span><\/p>\n

We, Sotrender<\/a>, a social media marketing analytics company, teamed up with Pan Wizualny<\/a> to spice up this analysis. We checked the popularity of dog and cat related hashtags on both Instagram and Twitter. For the former, we acquired data as of August 1st and for the latter we gathered data from the previous week. Additionally, we’ve presented the most liked and retweeted tweets from that period, so you’ll know what kind of pet content performs best. <\/span><\/p>\n

What can you get from it? Firstly, the internet was made for two things: <\/span>porn<\/a><\/strong> and cute animals<\/strong>, which you’re probably aware of by now. Secondly, there\u2019s a slightly higher chance that people seeing your content prefer dogs, so you can post something for them for an International Dog Day on August 26th. Unless it doesn\u2019t fit with your brand image. Then please don\u2019t. The world has seen too many companies failing at being fun and trendy, it doesn’t need another. <\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of popularity on both Twitter and Instagram, \u00a0dogs prevail<\/strong>. On Instagram you\u2019ll find 13 million more posts tagged with #dog than ones with #cat. That\u2019s quite a lot, isn\u2019t it? We checked the popularity of eight hashtags (four dog and four cat related) on Twitter, and the results say the same thing – people tweet more about dogs than about cats<\/strong>, which may be surprising, especially when we tell you that we ended our analysis in the wake of International Cat Day on August 8th. <\/span><\/p>\n

Do you know what the most successful startups are called? Unicorns<\/strong>. It means that a startup is worth more than $1 billion. There\u2019s not many of them, only 229 to date, just like the original, mythical animals (which, by the way, is also the official animal of Scotland. Yes, it\u2019s true, google it, if you don\u2019t believe us). We\u2019re not a unicorn startup yet, but we checked if people tweet about these creatures<\/strong>. Apparently, they do it only when they see one. Over eight days, we counted over 22 thousand tweets tagged #cats, 56 thousand tagged #dogs, and just 47 tagged #unicorns. Not so many. Like in real life, they are ever elusive on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most liked tweet in the analysed period was a story of an orphaned cat. Oh, and I see all those cat people thinking \u201cmaybe cats are less popular, but are more loved\u201d. Sorry to disappoint you, the story is that this cat was raised by huskies and acts like a genuine dog.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
