Parties are doing their best to gain support for their electorate and as many\u00a0floating voters as possible. Their campaigns take place in many different arenas,  and social media is one of them. However,  it\u2019s not a very friendly space\u00a0for politics and politicians. Social media is often compared to a big party,  and politics is nowhere near the best party topic. <a title=\"Click to download the full report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/general-election-uk-2015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">So\u00a0how are political parties performing on social media at the crucial time of the pre-election campaign?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a title=\"Click to see the page\" href=\"http:\/\/sotrender.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sotrender<\/a>,  the social media analytics company,  analyzed the online activities of the biggest parties on the most important social media\u00a0channels. Which party runs the most intensive electoral campaign and which one is the most efficient on each of the platforms? Social media are becoming (if not already became) a <a title=\"Click to read a report on European Parliament election\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/european-parliament-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very important way to communicate with the voters<\/a>. Read\u00a0the report and check how the parties engage users on social media and what language they use to influence their electorate and get\u00a0more votes.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>General Election on Facebook<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Every party running in May election has a Facebook Page. We measured their communication using three metrics: number of fans,  number\u00a0of posts and number of engaged users.\u00a0The governing coalition &#8211; <a title=\"Click to see the website\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conservatives.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Conservatives<\/a> and <a title=\"Click to see the website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.libdems.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liberal Democrats<\/a> &#8211; also has majority on Facebook,  their fanpages are followed by over\u00a0500 thousand fans combined. The Conservatives have over 400 thousand fans and their Facebook site is the biggest among all United\u00a0Kingdom political parties. Liberal Democrats with 109 thousand fans place 6th and have the smallest Facebook Page in our ranking. Her\u00a0Majesty\u2019s Loyal Opposition &#8211; <a title=\"Click to see the website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.labour.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour Party<\/a> &#8211; ranks 3rd in biggest Facebook Pages with 241 thousand fans,  being surpassed by right wing\u00a0<a title=\"Click to see the website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ukip.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Kingdom Independence Party<\/a>,  which is liked by 382 thousand Facebook users. <a title=\"Scottish National Party\" href=\"http:\/\/www.snp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottish National Party<\/a>,  a probable deciding factor\u00a0in case of a hung Parliament,  has 192 thousand fans and ranks 4th,  while <a title=\"Click to see the website\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenparty.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greens<\/a> rank 5th with 178 thousand fans.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17763\" style=\"width: 1348px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Fani.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17763\" class=\"wp-image-17763 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Fani.png\" alt=\"Fans of parties' Facebook Pages - United Kingdom General Election 2015  (report by Sotrender)\" width=\"1338\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Fani.png 1338w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Fani-475x155.png 475w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Fani-768x251.png 768w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Fani-950x311.png 950w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Fani-600x196.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1338px) 100vw, 1338px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17763\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fans of parties&#8217; Facebook Pages &#8211; United Kingdom General Election 2015 (as of April 20th 2015)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Wordcloud &#8211; Language of general communication<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The wordcloud is made up from words that were used most frequently\u00a0in posts published on parties\u2019 Facebook Pages. The bigger the word\u00a0appears,  the more often it was used during the analysed period. In general,  the most often used word by all parties is <strong><em>will<\/em><\/strong> followed by <em><strong>can<\/strong><\/em> which\u00a0emphasizes the promises parties make to their potential voters. It no longer consists mainly of funny viral videos of cats.\u00a0Political parties and politicians are also using videos to promote themselves and influence their voters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most active party on YouTube are Greens,  with 49 new videos and 749 thousand total views. UKIP is the most followed party on\u00a0YouTube with over 22 thousand subscribers,  but in the analysed period their videos had the smallest number of views. Scottish National\u00a0Party decided to hide the number of their subsribers and is second to last in terms of number of views. It instantly reacts to politicians\u2019 speeches,  gaffes,  conferences. It is also becoming one\u00a0of the basic means of political communication. We analysed the number of followers,  number of tweets published by a party profile\u00a0(including replies and retweets) and all the activities of other Twitter users (mentions,  retweets of party tweets,  adding to favourites, \u00a0replies to tweets).\u00a0Three parties have more than 100 thousand followers &#8211; besides The Labour Party,  these include the Conservatives and The Greens.\u00a0Labour has over 50 thousand more followeres than the Conservatives.
