It\u2019s been more than half a year now, since Twitter became more visual<\/a>, enabling users to preview photos from what was then Twitter’s picture platform and videos from Vine (now deceased)<\/strong>. At\u00a0Sotrender<\/a>, we checked the impact\u00a0of including a link, video or picture on the number of retweets and favorites<\/strong> changed<\/a>\u00a0over the last months. An analysis of the 1,000 most followed profiles on Twitter proved that tweets with \u00a0photos get 97%\u00a0more retweets and 135% more favs<\/strong> than those without!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0Photos on Twitter – the number of retweets and favs<\/h2>\n

First, we did a little research and found out that in March Twitter published similar analyses<\/a> on it\u2019s Media Blog<\/a>. \u00a0However, as distinct from Twitter, we \u00a0decided to measure not only the e\"twittermedia\"<\/a>ffects on the number of retweets, but also on the number of favorites<\/strong>. What\u2019s more, we omitted the impact of hashtags<\/strong> (which\u00a0in general proved to be the least boom-driven), in order to focus more on visuals and links. That’s how we reached\u00a0a final list of analysed content.<\/p>\n

Sotrender<\/a> examined:<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. photos<\/strong> that were uploaded on pic.Twitter.com<\/strong>,<\/li>\n
  2. videos on Vine<\/strong>\u00a0(both of them are visible on streams),<\/li>\n
  3. content from\u00a0http:\/\/twitpic.com\/<\/a><\/strong>,<\/li>\n
  4. Instagram links<\/strong><\/li>\n
  5. Facebook links.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Our analyses were based on almost 700k tweets<\/strong>, posted this year by most followed profiles.\u00a0Among them were Barack Obama<\/a>, Starbucks<\/a>, Dior<\/a>, PlayStation<\/a>, Real Madrid<\/a>, H&M<\/a>, McDonald’s<\/a>, as well as Shit Girls Say<\/a><\/strong>, to name only\u00a0a few. In order to make our analysis more comparable between profiles with different number of followers, we normalized the number of collected retweets to the average number of retweets triggered by profiles tweets.\u00a0This means that\u00a0all the numbers are adjusted to the situation in which average tweet gets 100 RTs and 100 favourites.\u00a0<\/strong>The results are as follows.<\/p>\n

    Photos on Twitter get awsome results<\/h2>\n

    It turned out that tweets with photos from pic.Twitter.com get almost twice as much retweets as these without<\/strong>! What’s more, they get 135%\u00a0more favorites\u00a0<\/strong>than others. What’s interesting, these values are much smaller than they used to be<\/a> six months ago<\/strong>. It may result from the fact, that in November, pictures on streams\u00a0were new and as a result also more interesting to Twitter users.<\/p>\n

    When it comes to\u00a0tweets with\u00a0Twitpic content, they\u00a0seem to be statistically insignificant<\/strong>, \u00a0which means that they do not \u00a0have influence on retweet rate nor favourite rate.<\/p>\n

    Videos are also effective<\/h2>\n

    Statistical measures also prove, that tweets with Vine videos have a positive effect\u00a0on both retweets and favorites rate<\/strong>. In this case, however, the impact is much smaller compared to\u00a0pic.Twitter.com photos. On average, Vine videos collected 52% more retweets and 26% more favourites<\/strong>\u00a0comparing to other tweets.<\/p>\n

    Facebook and Instagram links<\/h2>\n

    In general, including Facebook or Instagram link made\u00a0your tweet fall below the average<\/strong> popularity. It was actually worse in case of tweets with Instagram links, which collected 51% retweets less, compared to these without. In the case of tweets that included Facebook links it was 39% less.<\/p>\n
