It is though hard to say how their\u00a0efforts convert into the actual results and support. <a title=\"Read the article\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/politics-on-facebook-election-european-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\">Before the European Parliament Election we checked how the candidate parties are doing on Facebook<\/a>. Three days after the end of four-day vote,  the official results from most of the countries were\u00a0announced. <a title=\"Go to the page\" href=\"wwwo.sotrender.com\" target=\"_blank\">Sotrender <\/a>checked whether there is<strong>\u00a0a\u00a0relationship between interest on Facebook (measured as number of fans) and the actual results of the elections.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Basing on the performance of \u00a0national parties from the six biggest european countries (only five victorious parties presented on graphs) and additional analysis of Maltese parties performance,  which <a title=\"Politics on Facebook \u2013 Election to the European Parliament\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/politics-on-facebook-election-european-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\">intrigued us during previous analysis<\/a>,  we conclude that &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The results of the European Parliament Elections\u00a0are unpredictable &#8211; especially if the predictions are based on Facebook fans data.<\/strong> Among analysed countries,  there were ones with very strong\u00a0relationship between number of fans and parties actual results,  as well as those with\u00a0the direction of relationship \u00a0just the opposite to what could be expected.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12191\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/europe2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12191\" class=\"wp-image-12191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/europe2.jpg\" alt=\"European Parliament Elections - Countries under examination\" width=\"600\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/europe2.jpg 679w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/europe2-475x263.jpg 475w, https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/europe2-600x332.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">European Parliament Elections &#8211; Countries under examination<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Winners on Facebook win the\u00a0European Parliament Elections<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The strongest positive relationship between Facebook performance of a party and the results it scored during the European Parliament Elections\u00a0can be seen in case of:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1. <strong>Malta<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2. <strong>France<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3. <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unlike the\u00a0case of Malta where the results of general election held in March were almost the same as those of the EU Parliament &#8211; 1st place <a title=\"Partit Laburista\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/partitlaburista\" target=\"_blank\">Malta Labour Party<\/a>,  2nd place <a title=\"Partit Nazzjonalista\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/partitnazzjonalista\" target=\"_blank\">Nationalist Party<\/a> and 3rd place <a title=\"Alternattiva Demokratika\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/alternattiva\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Alternative<\/a>,  the results obtained\u00a0during the Election in France and UK were \u00a0unproportionate to the number of fans the parties had on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">French <a title=\"Front National\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FN.officiel\" target=\"_blank\">National Front<\/a>,  which won the Election by less than 5% of votes in the Hexagone,  attracted\u00a0almost twice as much users as the second\u00a0(<a title=\"Union pour un Mouvement Populaire\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ump\" target=\"_blank\">Union for a Popular Movement<\/a>) and third (<a title=\"Parti Socialiste\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/partisocialiste\" target=\"_blank\">Socialist Party<\/a> &#8211; <a title=\"Parti Radical de Gauche\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Parti-Radical-de-Gauche\/1400326610185319\" target=\"_blank\">Radical Party of the Left<\/a>) parties. Fourth place was occupied by the coalition of <a title=\"UDI \" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UnionDesDemocratesEtIndependants\" target=\"_blank\">Union\u00a0of Democrats and Independents<\/a>\u00a0and <a title=\"Mouvement D\u00e9mocrate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mouvementdemocrate\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Mouvement<\/a>,  whose total number of fans reached only 0.01% of country&#8217;s population.<span style=\"color: #545454;\">\u00a0<a title=\"Europe Ecologie\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/e.ecologie\" target=\"_blank\">The Greens<\/a>\u00a0placed as fifth.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12195\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/france1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12195\" class=\"wp-image-12195\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/france1-1024x647.jpg\" alt=\"European Parliament Elections - Countries under examination\" width=\"600\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12195\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winning parties &#8211; France<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12197\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/malta1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12197\" class=\"wp-image-12197\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/malta1-1024x647.jpg\" alt=\"European Parliament Elections: Facebook fans vs. reality\" width=\"600\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winning parties &#8211; Malta<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When it comes to the UK,  <strong>top 3 parties are\u00a0approximate in the number of Facebook fans,  however,  the relationship is invert &#8211; the worse place the party is ranked,  the more fans it has.<\/strong> What&#8217;s interesting,  although the <a title=\"Conservatives\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/conservative\" target=\"_blank\">Conservative Party<\/a>&#8216;s support in the Elections was more than threefold lower than <a title=\"UK Independence Party\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheUKIP\" target=\"_blank\">Independence<\/a> and <a title=\"The Labour Party\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/labourparty\" target=\"_blank\">Labour Parties<\/a>&#8216; results,  on Facebook it had more fans than each French,  Maltese and English party.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12199\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/United-Kingdom1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12199\" class=\"wp-image-12199\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/United-Kingdom1-1024x647.jpg\" alt=\"European Parliament Elections\" width=\"600\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winning parties &#8211; United Kingdom<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Outliers and peculiarities<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Low or almost no relationship may be recorded in cases of Italy,  Spain and Germany. Obviously,  Italy&#8217;s balance was upset by <a title=\"Movimento Cinque Stelle\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/movimentocinquestelle\" target=\"_blank\">Five Star Movement<\/a>,  which reached more than 400k fans on Facebook,  much more than other parties from the ranking below (<a title=\"Partido Democratico\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/partitodemocratico.it\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Party<\/a>,  \u00a0<a title=\"Forza Italia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ForzaItaliaUfficiale\" target=\"_blank\">Forza Italia<\/a>,  <a title=\"Lega Nord\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LegaNordUfficiale\" target=\"_blank\">Lega Nord<\/a> and the coalition of <a title=\"Nuovo Centrodestra\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nuovocentrodestra.it\" target=\"_blank\">New Centre-Right<\/a>,  Union of the Democratic Centre and <a title=\"Popolari per l'Italia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/assembleaperlitalia\" target=\"_blank\">Popolari per l&#8217;Italia<\/a>),  which altogether reached only 256k fans! <strong>This makes <a title=\"Politics on Facebook \u2013 Election to the European Parliament\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/politics-on-facebook-election-european-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\">Five Star Movement the most popular european political party on Facebook<\/a>.<\/strong> Congrats!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12201\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/italy1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12201\" class=\"wp-image-12201\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/italy1-1024x647.jpg\" alt=\"Politics on Facebook  - the most liked political parties\" width=\"600\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winning parties &#8211; Italy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Similar situation may be observed in case of Spanish top five &#8211; with nearly twice as much fans as <a title=\"Partido Popular\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pp\" target=\"_blank\">People&#8217;s Party<\/a>,  <a title=\"Partido Socialista Obrero Espa\u00f1ol\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/psoe\" target=\"_blank\">Spanish Socialist Worker&#8217;s Party<\/a>, \u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"La Izquierda Plural\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/laizquierdaplural\" target=\"_blank\">United Left <\/a>and <a title=\"Uni\u00f3n Progreso y Democracia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Union.Progreso.y.Democracia\" target=\"_blank\">Union,  Progress and Democracy<\/a>\u00a0combined, \u00a0<a title=\"Podemos\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Podemos\/269212336568846\" target=\"_blank\">For Social Democracy party (Podemos)<\/a>\u00a0routed the competition on Facebook. <strong>Despite social media success,  it\u00a0came barely fourth in the election race.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12203\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/spain1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12203\" class=\"wp-image-12203\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/spain1-1024x647.jpg\" alt=\"European Parliament Elections\" width=\"600\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winning parties &#8211; Spain<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The case of Germany is also specific,  especially taking under consideration top five political parties that got seats in the European Parliament. For\u00a0top three parties the situation doesn&#8217;t raise doubts &#8211; worse place and less fans go together. \u00a0It came out,  however,  that from fourth place the more fans on Facebook the party had,  \u00a0the more seldom it was chosen during the Elections. It&#8217;s worth mentioning that\u00a0sister parties&#8217;\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Christlich Demokratische Union Deutschlands\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CDU\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Democratic Union of Germany<\/a> and <a title=\"Christlich-Soziale Union\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CSU\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Social Union of Bavaria<\/a>\u00a0profiles (ranked first) have in total\u00a0less\u00a0fans than the Facebook profile of <a title=\"Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/alternativefuerde\" target=\"_blank\">Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland <\/a>(ranked fifth).\u00a0<\/strong>Moreover,  some parties that didn&#8217;t qualify for\u00a0top five,  like <a title=\"Piratenpartei\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PiratenparteiDeutschland\" target=\"_blank\">Piratenpartei<\/a>,  <a title=\"DiePARTEI\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DiePARTEI\" target=\"_blank\">Die PARTEI<\/a> or <a title=\"Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands \" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/npd.de\" target=\"_blank\">Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands<\/a>,  <a title=\"Pluragraph\" href=\"https:\/\/pluragraph.de\/categories\/parteien\/combined_with\/deutschland\" target=\"_blank\">do very well on social media services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12205\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/niemcy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12205\" class=\"wp-image-12205\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/niemcy.png\" alt=\"European Parliament Elections\" width=\"600\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winning parties &#8211; Germany<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Women without a right to vote? If only Facebook fans matter&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And <strong>the winner in recording the most peculiar relationship between\u00a0support in elections and support on Facebook is&#8230; Poland<\/strong> &#8211; the only country with negative\u00a0Pearson correlation coefficient (r = -0.17),  which means that <strong>the increase in results obtained during elections entails the decrease in number of Facebook fans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This phenomenon however,  has it&#8217;s explanation: these were the most controversial political parties,  like <a title=\"Kongres Nowej Prawicy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KongresNowejPrawicy\" target=\"_blank\">Kongres Nowej Prawicy<\/a>\u00a0(whose leader claims for instance that \u00a0<a title=\"Leader of Poland\u2019s Euro-sceptic party believes: \u201cWomen should not have right to vote.\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/sz-n.com\/2014\/04\/leader-of-polands-euro-sceptic-party-believes-women-should-not-have-right-to-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\">women should not have the right to vote<\/a>),  who tend to interest Polish Facebook users the most.\u00a0So maybe Facebook is not a place where people show their support,  but just search for the entertainment?
