We\u2019ve all heard about it and we talk about it almost every day. But here at Sotrender. we still receive regular questions about Facebook Reach. Is it different from views? How so? What are the different types of reach? How are they measured? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to clear any doubts you still might have, we\u2019ve gathered all the information you need to know below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reach and views<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start by explaining what reach is, what views are, and the difference between the two. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> represents the <strong>number of people who have seen any post published by a Facebook Page.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span>Reach only counts the\u00a0<\/span><b>number of unique users<\/b><span>\u00a0&#8211; each person only once. That means that even if the same person saw your post four times, it will still count<\/span><b>\u00a0only once.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t matter whether the user saw the content on their phone, tablet, or computer. You can also split reach up into other categories, which we will explain shortly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paid reach<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organic or viral reach<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main difference between reach and views is straightforward: t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he <\/span><b>number of views<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> represents how many times <strong>each piece of content<\/strong> was actually seen. The total number of views includes every single time a piece of content was viewed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, it doesn\u2019t matter if a single person has seen it 1 time, 3 times or 12 times. Each time they saw it counts as a view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another metric is <\/span><b>impressions. Impressions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">represent the number of Page views from both Facebook users (users who are logged in) and users who are not logged in or don\u2019t have a Facebook account at all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--HubSpot Call-to-Action Code --><span id=\"hs-cta-wrapper-a0f2136a-dccc-40f0-b875-6ae0a8ed96b4\" class=\"hs-cta-wrapper\"><span id=\"hs-cta-a0f2136a-dccc-40f0-b875-6ae0a8ed96b4\" class=\"hs-cta-node hs-cta-a0f2136a-dccc-40f0-b875-6ae0a8ed96b4\"><!-- [if lte IE 8]><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div id=\"hs-cta-ie-element\"><\/div>\n\n\n<![endif]--><a href=\"https:\/\/cta-redirect.hubspot.com\/cta\/redirect\/3842881\/a0f2136a-dccc-40f0-b875-6ae0a8ed96b4\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"hs-cta-img-a0f2136a-dccc-40f0-b875-6ae0a8ed96b4\" class=\"hs-cta-img aligncenter\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/no-cache.hubspot.com\/cta\/default\/3842881\/a0f2136a-dccc-40f0-b875-6ae0a8ed96b4.png\" alt=\"Start analyzing\u00a0your\u00a0Facebook performance\" \/><\/a><\/span><script charset=\"utf-8\" src=\"https:\/\/js.hscta.net\/cta\/current.js\"><\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> hbspt.cta.load(3842881, 'a0f2136a-dccc-40f0-b875-6ae0a8ed96b4', {}); <\/script><\/span><!-- end HubSpot Call-to-Action Code --><\/p>\n<h2><b>Types of reach<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Organic reach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the number of Page and post views published by a Page <strong>without paid (promotional) activities<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Paid reach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the number of Page and post views which are a <strong>result of paid activities (ads)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Viral reach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the number of Page and post views which are a <strong>result of other user activities (e.g. sharing)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: Information about viral reach is available <strong>only within the Sotrender tool<\/strong>; you won\u2019t find this metric in Facebook Insights, for example. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You get viral reach when a post receives thousands of likes, comments, and (typically) shares on Facebook. Or, to put it simply, when Facebook users engage with it a lot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A piece of content which has gone viral could have gained results as seen below:<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5581\" style=\"width: 386px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5581\" class=\"wp-image-5581 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sotrender.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/viral.png\" alt=\"viral reach on Facebook\" width=\"376\" height=\"162\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Example of viral reach on Facebook<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Total reach <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refers to either a Page or to a single post. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Page total reach<\/strong> &#8211; the number of unique users who have seen any content published by a Page in a specific period of time, regardless of the place where he\/she saw it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Post total reach<\/strong> &#8211; the number of unique users who have seen a post. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total reach (for a Page or for a single post) <strong>includes both paid and organic reach. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information about total reach is available only for selected periods: 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, and 28 days (max. 1 month). For other periods, the given reach will always refer to <strong>average daily reach<\/strong>. That is because it\u2019s not possible to know the exact amount of total reach for periods longer than one month, e.g. for a quarter or for a year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to know that <strong>reach includes dark posts<\/strong> &#8211; content that functions as an ad but is not available from the Facebook Page as a standard post. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, for many marketers, the total number of fans is thought to be equal to the amount of reach a published post gains. Unfortunately, with all the current changes being made within Facebook, <strong>this assumption is completely wrong<\/strong>. That\u2019s because posts will never be seen by all of a Page\u2019s fans. That\u2019s why the number of fans is currently very weakly connected to the actual reach your posts have. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How are unique users measured?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s go back to reach and unique users for a moment. How are they measured?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a look through two examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Facebook user sees a post 2 times in a week &#8211; on Monday and on Friday. He will be counted towards the average daily reach for Monday and the average daily reach for Friday. But in the <strong>total reach for the whole week,<\/strong> he will be counted <strong>only once<\/strong>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A similar situation arises when a Facebook user sees a post organically and then sees the <strong>same post but as an ad<\/strong>. He will be counted <strong>as a unique user once in organic reach and once in paid reach<\/strong>. But\u00a0<strong>he will be only be counted once\u00a0<\/strong>in <strong>total reach<\/strong>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why, unique users taken into consideration, it is not possible to sum up, for example, organic and paid reach to get total reach.
